View Ref-FileSetup: How to install Thing
Even though there is no installation program, installing Thing is quite
straightforward, involving nothing more than copying some files and
adjusting a few OS-specific settings.
First of all, create a new folder for Thing -- e.g. C:\THING. Now copy
the following files to this folder:
THING\THING.APP
THING\THING.RSC
THING\THINGTXT.RSC
THING\THINGREG.OVL
THING\THINGIMG.OVL
THING\THINGRUN.PRG
THING\ICONS.RSC
THING\ICONS.INF
If you want to save memory you can use the monochrome icons MONOICON.RSC
or the 'small' icons MEDICON.RSC for 640*200 screen resolution in place
of ICONS.RSC. In any case the file has to be renamed to ICONS.RSC, using
the 'Show Information...' function of the Atari TOS desktop or similar --
otherwise Thing cannot find its icons and outputs a corresponding alert!
When using MEDICON.RSC, you must not install ICONS.INF, because
MEDICON.RSC only contains the standard icons and not the others found
in ICONS.RSC and MONOICON.RSC!
On the other hand, if you have plenty of memory and always work with at
least 16 colours you can install the file THINGCOL.RSC in place of
THING.RSC (in the destination directory it must be renamed to THING.RSC);
the 'Info' dialog then will display the new Thing logo in colour.
To use the on-line help, you have to copy the following files to your
ST-Guide GUIDES folder:
DOC\THING.HYP
DOC\THING.REF
To use the Console window, you must install TOS2GEM, programmed by
Thomas Binder. Just copy the following file to the AUTO folder (the exact
position is not important):
TOS2GEM\TOS2GEM.PRG
You don't need TOS2GEM if you don't want Thing's Console window.
As an alternative you can, say, use VT52.PRG (supplied with MagiC),
or MINIWIN.APP (with MultiTOS).
MiNT users working under Single-TOS can also use the TOSWIN desk
accessory by Eric Smith (supplied with MiNT) as an alternative to
TOS2GEM.
